I think I’ve brought this up before, but I don’t think Jo’s selection of ‘Barebone’ as a last name is accidental. Praise-God Barebone was a big figure during Cromwell’s time as Lord Protector – very much a firebrand preacher. His son, If-Christ-Had-Not-Died-for-Thee-Thou-Hads’t-Been-Damned (seriously – he went by Nicholas), went on to basically create the idea of insurance. I hope we do find out more about the Barebone family in later movies, because I suspect Mary Lou got many-Greats-Grandpa Praise-God’s zealotry and one-less-Great-Grandpa Nicholas’ money, and decided to do something about witches with both.

I can think of so many possibilities with how Mary Lou got Credence. All I can say is; I definitely want that back story! I think that’s because I want to know exactly how extreme the New Salem Philanthropic Society is. Morbid thoughts again, but is Mary Lou extreme enough so she saw Credence’s mother, figured out she was a pregnant witch, and actually plotted to kidnap her baby once she gave birth? Could she be dead because Mary Lou killed her? Maybe his mother isn’t even dead, I always assumed she was, but perhaps she’s not and is still wondering where her kid is. That would be something if she ended up being the one saving Credence from his obscurus form. Maybe Dumbledore will tie into Credence because Dumbledore will find his mother. Now I’m just throwing ideas out of the park, but with so little information who knows what could happen.

And Michael, we’ll definitely pick up on that circus talk at MuggleNet Live! Can also talk about the video games cause I’m an avid Harry Potter video gamer as well. I used to have nightmares about Filch catching me under the invisibility cloak. Playing that part was scarier than Voldemort in the Sorcerer’s Stone PC game. Least it was in my opinion.

I said this on Alohomora, but I’ll say it again here for those of you who want in on the mystery! I’ll be wearing a Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain t-shirt and a backwards camouflage hat at MuggleNet Live.

Great comments from Ann and DisKid and of course from the podcasters!
Just wanted to add my thoughts.
Credence – really can’t get a handle on how old he is meant to be. Mid teens? It doesn’t help that Ezra Miller is in his mid-20s so Credence could be as old as that? My theory is that Credence meets Dumbledore (through Newt) and that it is Dumbledore who helps Credence control the Obscurus and also learn to be a proper, fully functioning Wizard. I think the hosts were right in that the you can’t stop being an obscurial, just learn to manage it (like other human conditions)

oh and Graves! So many unanswered questions!
When did Grindelwald transform into Graves? The timeline makes no sense! How could Grindelwald be in European plotting, planning, recruiting and killing aurors (perhaps even the real Graves) but also have enough time to learn and be able to convincingly impersonate the top US Auror who is respected and has loyal colleagues/staff?
And why did Newt think to do the Revelio spell – wouldn’t have it made more sense for Tina to do that as she was the one who knew the real Graves, and therefore had the correct suspicions about this one?!

Is weird sister member Merton Graves related to Percival Graves?

  6. Hi there!
Even though I have been listening to you guys since the beggining (and been an Alohomora listener since 2013), this is my first time writing a comment.

While I was listening to the episode, I couldn’t help but think about what you were saying about separating the obscurus from Credence. If I remember correctly, you were saying that this separation may be like Rowling saying that beeing queer or different is wrong and were wondering which direction she would go. I kind of have the feeling that, in the end, Credence will find a way to integrate his obscurus and become to terms with everything that makes him different and become, in a way, whole.

And I think that here is where Dumbledore may come in. Maybe Dumbledore will be a part of Credence finally accepting himself and an attempt to do for him what he couldn’t do for Ariana.
