The discussion of Josephine Baker got me thinking about one of my favorite fictional characters who was based after Josephine, that being Jordan Baker, the professional golfer in The Great Gatsby. She became one of my favorite characters after I read a college paper someone had written and made available online discussing the various aspects of queer representation in The Great Gatsby. The paper argues the case for both Nick (the narrator) and Jordan being gay, making some convincing arguments, but I’m more interested in Jordan as a character. (Although the more I think about it, the more Nick bears a certain resemblance to Newt-certainly he seems to be a Hufflepuff.) The books’ descriptions of her emphasize how confident she always appears to be; almost coming off as haughty in her interactions with others. I’m bringing her up, not only because of her connection with Josephine Baker but also because, well, consider this: J.K. Rowling has established certain historical figures to be a part of the magical community in the past. She has also claimed famously established fictional characters (Merlin for example) for her own narrative. I’m wondering if she would be able to take a character such as Jordan Baker and insert her into Newt’s storyline. I imagine these characters are under some form if copyright laws , but at the very least it’s a fun activity to imagine how Jordan might interact with Newt and Co. Thank you and please continue talking about queer representation because it is so very important.

Thanks for another amazing episode! Michael!!! You scared me so bad with that story. I was lying in bed at night listening to the episode and I was terrified! It definitely took me awhile to fall asleep after. As for the question of the week… what if at the theme park you had like one of the simulation rides and it could take you all through the case and you would meet all the creatures and get thrown around or something? It’s not a complete idea but I think something like that would be cool.
