Mentioned in Fantastic Beasts: NO
Reported Locations: The swamps of Louisiana
First Reported: French/Creole Legend
Known Abilities: Blood-sucking attack; transfer of lycanthropic curse
The Rougarou has a human body with the head of a dog and, in many ways, is the Creole version of a werewolf. It prowls the swamps of Louisiana seeking out prey and if doesn’t outright kill its victim, it will transfer its curse, creating more Rougarou.
While the Rougarou isn’t often sighted by No-Majes, it is a sort of boogieman for the children of Louisiana. The community will threaten the children with a visit from the Rougarou when they, for instance, break their Lent resolution.
ACCORDING TO POTTERMORE
One North American wandmaker of the 1920s, Violette Beauvais, used the hair of the Rougarou to create her wands. Beauvais wands were said to take to Dark magic, but many good-natured individuals used them, including the MACUSA president herself, Seraphina Picquery.
